Greg’s Garden Journal – 2022

Preparation: Fixed a bamboo post on 1 corner of the fence which was broken by a tree limb that fell on the fence over the winter and replaced it with cedar. Repaired other parts of the fence that were damaged by the limb. Cleaned debris from the garden that should have been removed last Fall and turned over the soil. Also added drip irrigation after years of using soaker hoses that never performed well.

Running Journal

7/15/22 – Fertilized tomatoes, peppers, squash, and cucumbers with Mircacle Gro for Tomatoes. First green bean and first tomato since late June. Will be at the beach for about a week and a half and I expect that this will be a productive period for the garden.

7/3/22 – Identified rust on beans, squash, and cucumbers. Cut off damages leaves with a scissors, dipping the scissors in 10% bleach water before each cut. Applied copper based fungicide to those three crops.

Cleaned up lettuce bed and weeded generally. Applied DE to basil (some leaves are being chewed, but just basil, no other plants), fertilized tomatoes, peppers, squash, and cucumbers with Mircacle Gro for Tomatoes

7/2/22 – Harvested all spring lettuce: Romain (left), spinach (center), arugula (right) since it is getting ready to bolt. The harvest was about 2 lb total for all three lettuces, and the romaine only developed a small head of leave for each plan. While disappointing considering the time and effort devoted, it is encouraging given that I haven’t had any harvest since the garden has been in this location. It will yield a few salads, and the arugula will go even further because I use it sparingly. The most likely cause of the low yield are the late date for planting and the lack of adequate irrigation early (the drip line wasn’t installed right away). We could also have had an overcrowding issue as well as a lack of adequate feralization early in the process. So bottom line, I’m happy with the results, but also expect improvement in coming seasons.

6/18/22 – Additional weeding and duested with DE. Also harvested first tomato from 4th of July Slicer plant. Seems more like a cherry tomato with an attitude than a “slicer”.

6/17/22 – Fertilize with Miracle Grow on lettuce, spinach, arugula, tomatoes, peppers. squash, cucumbers. Fertilized with calcium nitrate for tomatoes. Lower tomato leave continue to get spots and die. Removed damaged branches. All tomatoes have at least 3 main stems and will start to remove suckers. Saw pill (roly poly) bugs by tomatoes and will treat with diatomaceous earth. Also notice a few bean plants that have been cut at the base. Replanted and will use DE there as well.

5/31/22 – Fertilize with Miracle Grow on lettuce, spinach, arugula, carrots, tomatoes, peppers. basil, parsley, cucumbers, squash, thyme, rosemary.

5/29/22 – Built tepe trellises for cucumbers and squash (yellow and zucchini), and lean to for beans. Added drip irrigation to those planting areas. Planted cucumber, zucchini, black beans, and snap beans (pole)

5/3/22 – Planted tomatoes and peppers. Added more romain, spinich, and arugula by seed. Planted Cilantro by seed. Fertilized with miracle grow, and calcium notrate for tomatoes. Dusted with diatomaceous earth.

4/23/22 – Completed annual garden preparation and planted Basil, Parsley, Thyme, and Rosemary from purchased plants. First planting of seeds for Carrots, Radishes, Romain, Spinich, and Arugula. Dusted basil and parsely with diatomaceous earth and applied Garden Safe insect killer (pyrethrines + piperonyl butoxide)

Notes
  • Discovered that bamboo deteriorates too rapidly for fence material even when it does not come into contact with the ground. Avoid for this purpose.
