Greg’s Garden Journal – 2023

Preparation:

Running Journal

3/11 – 3/13/23 – Prepared indoor seed planting including testing of the grow light, adjusting to 3 – 4″ above the top of the flats, filling flats with starting formula and water. Planted all indoor seeds identified in this date range tracking chart and placed plastic lid over trays. Note that parsely and nasturtium seeds were soaked overnight on the 12th and planted the following day.

3/18/23 – All seedlings in one flat were germinated and touching the plastic lid. Removed lid on that flat.

3/20/23 – Some plants in the open flat were drooping and wilting. Noticed brown edges on some of the leaves. Watered flats and raised light to 6″ above tops of seedlings.

4/1 – 4/3/23 – Prepared much of the garden for planting (everything above the gate)

4/7/23 – Fertalized with 10-10-10. Transplanted Broccoli and Cauliflower to garden and planted Romain, Spinich, Arugla, Carrotts, Radishes, and Peas.

4/16/23 – Prepared remainder of garden and re-establisblished drip irrigation.

4/21/23 – Transplanted most of indoor plants to larger planters (original cells were outgrown).

5/7/23 – Transplanted tomatoes and peppers, side dressing with Calcium Nitrate fertalizer. Broccoli and cauliflower transplances are mostly dead from having lost their leaves. It appears something is eating them, but not sure. Had similar issues with basil when it was left in the garden a few days to harden. Have not been able to dust with DE because of fairly constant rain. Raddishes, romain, arugla, carrotts, spinich has also been disappointing. Perhaps because of too litle water at shortly following planting. Peas are just showing signs of growing. Was surprised because they were supposed to germinate much quicker that this. Gave away many plants at church.

Notes
  • Consider adding a second T5 x 4′ grow light. Single light does not provide sufficient lighting for a full tray of seedlings.
  • Consider starting tomatoes a week or two later, and broccoli/cauliflower a couple weeks earlier
